Summer has finally arrived (might not look like the weather forecast is aware of that though). It means that most likely you have something exciting planned for the holidays season.

It could include going abroad, or travelling to see friends and family and even just going out for some al fresco dining.

As parents we always have to make a choice between planning something fun for ourselves and out family and potentially sacrificing some routine and maybe night sleep.

Especially, summer holiday might prove particularly challenging if you have an older child to keep busy, while trying to stick to a sleep routine with the younger one.

But no need to worry, I have prepared my top sleep tips, which will help you stay on track during the holiday season.

Adjust their night clothing accordingly with temperature changes

For uninterrupted sleep it is important to make sure your baby is comfortable throughout the night.

A popular question from parents during the summer months is what to dress the baby in if they are going away somewhere hot.

In most hot countries you'd have air conditioning in the room, so it is very important not to get your baby too cold.

I suggest using 1.0 TOG even when you are away as usually you have a chance to adjust the room temperature. Shop our range of 1.0 TOG clothes below.

In some cases it might be best to even switch the air conditioning off and consider dressing them in a PJ or a onesie depending on the room temperature. If you need more information on a dressing guide, you can find it here.

Travelling to a different time zone with the baby . You could be travelling far away or somewhere with only 2 hour difference, but the stress is real.

How can you prepare for it? If it's a short travel and you want to be all ready to go out for dinner etc from day one, it could be a good idea to start adjusting the bedtime up to one week in advance.

You could gradually shift bedtime by about 30 min a day until you get to a desired time. Don't forget that you might have to add a power nap in order to help your little one last a bit longer. Alternatively try an extend one of their naps.

How to adjust sleep on the day of the flight/car ride.

Car ride is probably an easier option as you can always ensure you leave closer to their naptime.

Flights, however present a slightly more challenging option. Arriving to the airport 3 hours before your departure time, plus taking into account travelling to the airport, going through security, boarding etc might mean you do not have much control over your baby's sleep schedule on the day.

Your best option would be to have a pram nap before boarding, or you might need to rock them to sleep. While on the plane also try and fit a nap in while you fly, not to have a very overtired baby by the time you arrive at your destination.

Planning a day trip

If you have more than one child, most likely you will be trying to fill your diary with social activities for your older child during the school holidays.

In some cases it can mean being out the whole day and having to stick to pram naps. There are a few thing to keep in mind if you are out for the day.

Use a dark cover for the pram which is summer friendly. Something like SnoozeShade would be your best option as you want to avoid overheating your baby while they are napping.

Remember that they are less likely to have long naps on the go, so keep in mind that you are more likely to need an extra nap and probably would need to shorten their wake windows by 30 min.

If you get home early then try an earlier bedtime.

What if your baby falls asleep on the way home? If you are travelling back home close to bedtime it is possible that your little one will drop off without making it home.

You have two options in this case. Option 1: you can try and transfer them to their bed straight from the car seat/pram in hopes they won't wake up.

Option 2: they do wake up when you move them. If it is not possible to resettle them quickly back to sleep you might have to give them a short wake window before going back to your usual bedtime routine.

In this case the wake window doesn't need to be as long as during the day. If for example your baby's wake window is 2 hours long you could make it as short as 45 minutes before you put them back down. You want to avoid them being too tired by them time you put them to bed for the night.
